The Tim Allen show(s) is a show within a show. It is the story of a family behind a successful home improvement show. On the “Fix-it” show the Tim Allen stage character grunts and “rewires” his way through anything. He displays a twisted form of Zen logic to explain the “how to’s”. It’s high energy, funny and informative. However, at home Tim knows just enough to be dangerous. His wife, a very smart computer aided design engineer, is between jobs. She calls him on everything that he acts like he knows. As dumb as she feels his macho act is, there is a bit of competitiveness at the root of her barbs. Together with their new baby, the family becomes a backdrop for Tim’s successes and failures trying to be all things to all people. The family perseveres, using a creative outlook, love and humor.

The two shows intertwine, with the plot of one weaving into the action of the other; Tim shocks himself at the “real” home and then talks about electrical safety during the next "Fix-it" show. On the “Fix-it” show we see new doors and windows out in a home only to find the subject of the “real” show is communication.

One neighbor in particular plays an important role. Behind Allen’s home lives 5 foot 4 inch nightmare, D.J. that no one ever sees. He talks to Tim behind a five foot fence, so all we ever see is from the eyes up. He is Tim’s sounding board and confidant.
